Long Island is home to 37 state parks, and each one is an adventure on its own. Whether you want high-energy fun, serene fishing spots, or a cozy family camping getaway by the ocean, you’ll find it here.

Our Favorite Long Island Attractions,
Hot Spots, and Restaurants

  • Cold Spring Harbor State Park (95 Harbor Rd, Cold Spring Harbor) – This 40-acre park with rolling hills and views of Cold Spring Harbor is perfect for spotting migrating songbirds, great horned owls, and red-tailed hawks. The hilly terrain is prime for hiking but be prepared for the challenge—the elevation isn’t for everyone.

  • Orient Beach State Park (North Country Road, Route 25 Orient) – A beautiful sandy beach for sunbathing and swimming in the turquoise waters. Beyond swimming, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities like kayaking, fishing, and windsurfing, making it an action-packed day out.

  • Sagamore Hill National Historic Site (20 Sagamore Hill Rd, Oyster Bay) – No president is as synonymous with national parks as Theodore Roosevelt. Here lies his 26-room Victorian home, which sits on 95 acres of forest, near a tidal marsh and bay beach—a must-visit for patriots and history buffs. It’s not just a history hotspot; it’s also perfect for hiking, biking, and making friends while you stroll around.

  • Eisenhower Park (1899 Hempstead Tpke, East Meadow) – Eisenhower Park is referred to as Nassau County’s very own “Central Park,” and it lives up to that title. Spanning 930 acres, this park is a playground for everyone, with paved trails perfect for walkers, cyclists, skaters, and joggers. Kids will love taking circus classes at I.FLY Trapeze School while parents can take to boating on the pond.

  • John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden (Dogwood Ln, Mill Neck) – A garden that enchants the eye and soothes the soul. This Japanese garden—which boasts an impressive collection of North American and Asian plants—was designed to impart a meditative experience. One of its standout features is a stepping stone path, designed to capture the intimate feel of a mountain trail.

  • Caumsett State Historic Park (25 Lloyd Harbor Rd, Lloyd Harbor) – An adventurer’s dream, with hiking trails, fishing, bird watching, cross-country skiing, nature photography, and more—all in one place. Plus, with 3 miles of paved biking roads, you’ll need a full weekend to explore it all.

  • Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park (1395 Planting Fields Rd, Oyster Bay) – Step into a bygone era of grandeur at Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, where expansive lawns, elegant gardens, and a majestic 65-room Tudor-style mansion await. Poetry enthusiasts and literature buffs can visit the birthplace of Walt Whitman there, while people of all ages will enjoy trails, benches, and a greenhouse to clear their minds, listen to the birds, and admire the enchanting flowers and foliage.

  • Jones Beach State Park (1 Ocean Pkwy, Wantagh, NY) – Famous for its landmark water tower and popular sandy shores, Jones Beach State Park is Long Island’s crown jewel. Since the summer of 2024, NY Governor Kathy Hochul has been making it even better. She’s just rolled out a new initiative to drop the pool entry fees at Jones Beach Bathhouse (and 14 other state pools) to urge people to “get offline, get outside.” For adrenaline junkies and families, check out WildPlay Jones Beach for ziplines, aerial adventures, and a 40ft jump right next to the ocean. For green thumbs and environmentalists, pay Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center a visit.

  • Connetquot River State Park Preserve (4090 Sunrise Hwy, Oakdale) – Once considered a world-class trout fishery, it remains a favorite haunt for fly fishermen. Spanning over 3400 acres of land and water, the preserve is dedicated to protecting and nurturing game birds, fish, and wildlife. Anglers can enjoy stream trout fishing in the cool river waters, with three types of trout being raised there.
